5 Reasons Why Curacao is the Best Island to Invest Your Money

Whether you’re a local resident, foreign investor, or curious tourist, Curacao is a smart investment.

Everyone is flocking to this picturesque island nation to enjoy its beautiful beaches and outdoor activities, as well as its bustling nightlife and ample business opportunities. From young entrepreneurs to retirees, Curacao has something for everyone. Here are the top reasons why investing in Curacao is the best financial move you’ll ever make.

Climate and Geography

Curacao is located within the southernmost fringe of the hurricane belt, rarely experiencing hurricanes or tropical storms. Unlike most Caribbean islands that are under constant threat every year, Curacao is safe compared to other islands. In 2017, Hurricane Maria, a category 5 storm with winds over 280 km/hour, slammed into the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, causing destruction of 80-90% of all buildings and killing over 2500 people. The total damage was estimated around $16 billion USD.

In addition to its geographic location, Curacao is known for its beautiful weather all-year round, with average temperatures in Curacao hovering around 28°C (76°F). Even in September, the hottest month of the year, the Trade Winds help keep you cool day and night. Luckily, Curacao has plenty of water activities, including kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and jet skiing, to help you cool off during the warmer months. Also, some of the best scuba diving sites in the world are on Curacao! You’ll see green and hawksbill sea turtles, swarms of tropical fish, and healthy, vibrant coral reefs. Curacao also has many restoration projects going on, so future generations can enjoy the island’s natural wonders.

Thriving Economy

Perfectly situated between North and South America in the Southern Caribbean, Curacao has a diverse and open economy with a highly skilled and educated workforce. Most locals are multilingual, speaking Dutch, English, Papiamentu (local language on Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao), and Spanish.  Unlike other island nations, Curacao has a very stable financial and banking system.

Curacao also enjoys special access to both the US and EU markets through the US Caribbean Basin Initiative and European Union-Overseas and Territories Agreement, respectively. With preferential status to multiple overseas markets and one of the finest natural harbors in the Caribbean, Curacao’s international shipping sector, including logistics and dry dock services, is thriving. More companies are relocating to Curacao, bringing more high-paying jobs and further economic development.

The tourism sector is also booming, including high-end hotel chains such as Hilton, Hyatt, and Marriott opening their doors. From a 2023 survey, Carnival UK cruise ship passengers voted Curacao as their number one destination, enjoying our historic city center and stunning beaches. According to the Curacao Tourism Board, 147,207 visitors ventured to Curacao in February 2023, up a whopping 84% compared to the previous year!

Curacao is also researching opportunities for renewable energy sources- wind, solar, and deep-water energy, helping residents cut costs on their monthly energy bills.

Tax Incentives

Curacao offers a variety of tax incentives for business and individuals. For example, a newly incorporated business is eligible for a “tax holiday” if the investment is a minimum of ANG 250,000 (~$140,00 USD). Hotel and similar recreational businesses must reach a higher minimum to qualify. In addition to businesses, the island also grants tax relief to foreign pensioners. If a pensioner meets all the requirements, their worldwide income from foreign sources is taxed at a flat rate of only 10%! History and Architecture

Experience the historic city of Willemstad by taking a leisurely stroll around town. A mixture of cultures and styles, Curacao is the only island in the Caribbean that’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1634, the people of the Netherlands created a trading settlement on Curacao, with development continuing over the centuries. The historic area of Willemstad reflects not only European, but also, Spanish, and Portuguese architecture and style. Visit the Fort Amsterdam, the Maritime Museum in Scharloo, and Museum Kura Hulanda to gain a deeper insight into this multicultural and historically rich island.

Bustling Nightlife and Excellent Restaurants

Curacao boasts a vibrant and exciting nightlife. As more buildings in downtown Willemstad are renovated, more restaurants, bars, and shops are opening. Take a stroll down on any street in Pietermaai and Punda on Thursday nights, and you’ll find salsa bands jamming, people dancing, and drinks flowing. Watch the sunset at the rooftop restaurant Cascade then wander to Mr. Porter for a refreshing cocktail. Across the Queen Emma bridge in Otrobanda, you’ll discover the newly renovated Kura Hulanda, with a cozy and colorful European-like courtyard. This area is now filled with new bars, restaurants, and shops including Flores, brgr haus, and Kas Lila Gifts and more. Festivals, like the Blueseas Festival, have returned, bringing international musicians back to Curacao!

As you can see, Curacao has a lot to offer. No hurricanes, warm weather, and delicious food options, Curacao is truly a hidden gem in the Southern Caribbean.
