Stichting monumentenzorg Curacao sells some of its monumental buildings.

WILLEMSTAD – The Curaçao Monument Care Foundation has initiated the sale of some of its monumental buildings. Six residential houses and two office buildings, located in Ser'i Otrobanda, west of the bridge ramp, have been for sale via their website since Monday.

The proceeds will be used for existing and future restoration projects of the foundation, which has more than 120 restored monuments in its possession.

It is a first for the almost seventy-year-old non-profit organization to offer properties on the open market. The positive trend in appreciation for monumental buildings among a broader public has contributed to confidence that the market will be able to take over the responsibility for the maintenance of the buildings.

In addition, the need for alternative sources of income has increased since subsidies from the Netherlands disappeared with the establishment of the Country Curaçao thirteen years ago. Although the foundation can fund ongoing maintenance with the current rental income, this jeopardizes the core mission of restoring endangered monumental buildings.

Details about the buildings for sale can be found on the Monumentenzorg website. The commercial buildings, Villa Washington and La Armada, are located on LB Smithplein. The houses are located on Bonairestraat and Witteweg.

To prevent undesirable consequences of the sale, Monumentenzorg has built guarantees into the purchase contract. For example, the new owner must maintain the property and it may not be resold within five years. When selling homes, a buyer with the intention of owning their own home is preferred.

The properties to be sold have all already been restored, although some require extra attention due to long-term vacancy. During the restorations, as much attention as possible has been paid to preserving original details and the historic layout. For the larger properties, historical information is also available for potential buyers who are interested in the former residents of the property.
